A cooling tower is a heat rejection device that removes waste heat from a system by cooling a stream of water to a lower temperature. These are commonly used in industrial processes, power plants, HVAC systems, and refineries to manage and dissipate excess heat.
The cooling process generally involves:
Hot water from a system or industrial process is pumped to the top of the tower.
The water is distributed over fill media, which increases the surface area for heat exchange.
Air flows through the tower (either naturally or using fans), causing some of the water to evaporate.
Evaporation removes heat from the remaining water, which is collected at the bottom and returned to the system.
